Why Wood Disposal in Zürich Is Not as Simple as It Seems

Wood looks like the easiest thing to dispose of. It is natural, recyclable, and harmless. But in Zürich — and across Switzerland — the disposal of wood is governed by specific regulations that most residents are simply unaware of. The type of wood determines which facility it goes to, how it must be transported, and whether standard disposal channels even apply.

The Züri-Sack is not an option for timber. The Züri-Sack (Zürich's household waste bag system) accepts only household rubbish. Bulky timber — whether a fence panel, a broken shelf, or garden prunings — must go through a separate collection or drop-off route. Placing large wood items on the pavement without an official ERZ Sperrgutabfuhr arrangement is not permitted in Zürich and can result in a fine.

ZüriClean solves the problem simply. We collect all types of wood from your property — treated or untreated, garden timber or old furniture — and handle sorting, transport, and compliant disposal on your behalf. And because we also offer professional cleaning services, we can clear your property and leave it clean in a single visit.

What We Remove — Wood Types Covered

01

Old Timber Furniture

We collect wooden chairs, tables, shelves, wardrobes, bed frames, and all other solid wood furniture. These are assessed at the point of collection — natural wood furniture is separated from items with heavy lacquer, paint, or chemical treatment for correct sorting.

02

Garden Wood & Prunings

Tree branches, hedge cuttings, fence posts, wooden pallets, decking boards, and garden shed panels are among the most commonly disposed of wood types in Zürich. These items are too large and too heavy for the Züri-Sack and require a separate collection. We carry out from gardens and terraces at any floor level.

03

Renovation & Construction Offcuts

Leftover timber beams, floorboards, skirting boards, door frames, and building offcuts from renovations are a common disposal challenge. These often include treated or coated wood, requiring careful sorting. We assess on collection and route each type to the correct facility.

04

Old Wooden Pallets

Wooden pallets are classed as commercial packaging waste under Swiss regulations and cannot be disposed of through household channels. We collect pallets individually or in bulk and deliver them to licensed processing facilities.

05

Cellar & Storage Wood

Old wood stored in cellars — broken furniture, scrap timber, stacked boards — is a common clearance challenge. It is heavy, awkward, and difficult to carry through narrow cellar corridors. Our team handles the carry-out, including from the basement levels.

How Wood Disposal Works — 4 Simple Steps

01

Step 1: Request Your Free Quote

You describe the wood you need to dispose of — type, approximate volume, floor level, and access conditions. We respond with a written fixed-price quote within a few hours. No hidden costs, no surprises on the day.

02

Step 2: We Confirm Your Booking

You choose a date and time window that suits you. We confirm by email. If your flat handover or renovation deadline is time-sensitive, let us know — we prioritise urgent bookings and offer same-day availability when our schedule allows.

03

Step 3: Our Team Arrives and Removes Everything

We carry the wood out of your property, garden, or cellar — including items that are heavy, awkward, or stored in difficult-access areas. We assess the wood on-site and sort treated and untreated timber separately as we work.

04

Step 4: Eco-Compliant Disposal & Your Confirmation

Untreated wood is delivered for recycling or energy recovery at authorised facilities. Treated wood is routed to licensed processing facilities that handle regulated wood waste under the Swiss TVA framework. You receive a written Entsorgungsnachweis (disposal confirmation) on request.

Wood Disposal + Property Cleaning: One Booking, One Team

ZüriClean is the only company in Zürich that offers professional wood disposal and certified property cleaning from a single provider. This matters most when you are vacating a flat, completing a renovation, or clearing a property for sale — clearing the wood and cleaning the space can be done in a single visit, saving you time and the complexity of managing two separate services.

Why the combination works:

No second team required: Our team removes the wood first, then cleans the property — walls, floors, and cleared rooms. You deal with one provider, one appointment, and one invoice.
Dust and debris follow-up included: Wood removal creates dust and debris. Our cleaning team follows immediately, leaving the property clean to the handover standard.
Flexible scope: Whether you need a deep clean, an end-of-tenancy clean, or a basic post-clearance tidy, we adapt the scope to your situation at the time of quote.
Documented for landlords: A single itemised invoice covering both disposal and cleaning provides clear documentation for tenant deposit negotiations or property handover records.

See our End-of-Tenancy Cleaning Zürich page for full details on our handover-guaranteed cleaning service.

What Happens to Your Wood After Collection

We do not deliver all wood to a single facility. Swiss environmental law requires wood to be sorted by treatment status before disposal — and we apply this sorting on every job, at source, before the wood leaves your property.

01

Untreated (Natural) Wood — A1 Category

Clean, uncoated natural wood — including untreated furniture, raw timber offcuts, and garden prunings — is classified as Altholz A1 under the Swiss Altholzverordnung framework. This category is eligible for direct recycling as a material or for energy recovery at authorised biomass facilities. It is the cleanest and most recyclable wood category.

02

Lightly Treated Wood — A2 Category

Wood with light surface treatment — such as glued or lightly painted panels — is classified as Altholz A2. It is still eligible for energy recovery but requires processing at a facility equipped to handle residual coating materials. We route A2 wood to the correct ERZ-approved processors.

03

Heavily Treated & Regulated Wood — A3 and A4

Chemically impregnated, pressure-treated, or heavily contaminated wood falls into the Altholz A3 and A4 categories. This includes old railway sleepers, telephone poles, pressure-treated fence posts, and some types of industrial timber. A3/A4 wood is classified as a regulated waste type under the Swiss TVA and must be delivered to specialist processing facilities — not to standard recycling channels.

04

We identify A3/A4 wood during our initial assessment and route it correctly.

Customers do not need to classify their own wood — our team does this on-site.

05

Garden Wood & Prunings

Green garden waste — freshly cut branches, hedge trimmings, and grass cuttings — is processed separately from dry timber. It goes to licensed composting or biomass facilities in the Zürich area.

The Wood Disposal Rule Most Zürich Residents Do Not Know

When most people think about disposing of wood, they think of one thing: wood. Natural, burnable, recyclable. But under Swiss environmental law, not all wood is the same — and using the wrong disposal channel for the wrong type of wood is a compliance problem that no competitor in Zürich currently explains to its customers.

The Swiss Classification System for Wood Waste

Switzerland classifies all wood waste into four categories under the Altholzverordnung and the Technische Verordnung über Abfälle (TVA):

A1

A1 — Natural wood:

Untreated, unpainted, uncoated timber. Fully recyclable. Accepted at the Recyclinghof Werdhölzli and most standard collection services.

A2

A2 — Lightly treated wood:

Glued, lightly painted, or surface-coated wood. Eligible for energy recovery at facilities equipped to handle trace coating residues.

A3

A3 — Contaminated wood:

Wood with heavy coatings, varnishes, or chemical treatments. Must go to specialist facilities. Cannot be mixed with A1 or A2.

A4

A4 — Hazardous wood:

Pressure-treated with chromium, arsenic, or creosote — typically old railway sleepers, fence posts, or industrial timber. Classified as hazardous waste under the TVA. Requires specialist handling.

Why This Matters to You

If your wood load contains a mix of categories — which is common in cellar clearances, garden clearances, and renovations — and you deliver it to the wrong facility, you may be charged for reclassification, turned away, or — in the case of A4 wood — face a regulatory issue.

ZüriClean assesses your wood on-site and sorts it into the correct categories before transport. You do not need to know which type you have. We identify it, route it correctly, and document the disposal. This is what professional wood disposal looks like — and it is what separates a compliant service from a company that simply puts everything in a skip.

Important

If you have old railway sleepers, creosote-treated fence posts, or heavily weathered industrial timber on your property, do not attempt to burn them in a garden fire. A4 category wood releases toxic compounds when burned. Contact us for a quote — we will handle safe and compliant collection.

Why Zürich Residents Choose ZüriClean for Wood Disposal

02

We Sort the Wood — You Do Not Have To

Most customers cannot tell the difference between A1, A2, and A3 wood. Our team assesses and sorts on-site. You describe what you have; we handle the classification and routing. No risk of taking the wrong type to the wrong facility.

03

English-Speaking Team

Our team is fully English-speaking — ideal for expats and international residents who are unfamiliar with Swiss waste regulations or who simply prefer to communicate in English during the job.

04

Cleaning + Disposal From One Provider

No other company in Zürich offers both professional wood removal and certified property cleaning. ZüriClean does. Whether you need a full end-of-tenancy clean after a property clearance, or a post-renovation tidy, we handle both in one visit.

06

Entsorgungsnachweis on Request

We provide a written disposal confirmation (Entsorgungsnachweis) on request — useful if your landlord, property manager, or employer requires documented proof of compliant wood disposal.

Frequently Asked Questions

ZüriClean collects all types of old wooden furniture and timber from properties across all Zürich Kreise and surrounding communes. We bring our own team and equipment for carry-out and handle all sorting and disposal on your behalf.

Guide prices start from CHF 60 for a single large timber item and from CHF 150 for a small load of approximately one cubic metre. A confirmed written fixed-price quote is provided free of charge after you describe your wood volume and access conditions.

No. The Züri-Sack is for household waste only. Timber, furniture, and garden wood are classified as Sperrgut (bulky waste) or regulated wood waste and cannot be placed in standard household waste bags. Placing large items on the pavement without an official ERZ arrangement is not permitted in Zürich.

A standard wood collection takes 1–3 hours from our arrival to completion, depending on volume and access conditions. A large cellar clearance or garden timber job may take up to half a day. We give you an estimated time window in your written quote.

Treated wood includes any timber that has been painted, varnished, chemically impregnated, or pressure-treated. Under the Swiss Altholzverordnung, treated wood must be sorted from untreated wood and delivered to specific licensed facilities. Mixing treated and untreated wood in a single disposal load creates compliance problems and potential extra costs. ZüriClean sorts all wood on-site, so you do not need to classify anything yourself.

Yes — but only through regulated channels. Railway sleepers and creosote-treated timber are classified as Altholz A4 (hazardous regulated wood) under the Swiss TVA. They cannot go to standard recycling centres. ZüriClean identifies A4 materials on-site and coordinates specialist collection and disposal. Do not attempt to burn this type of wood — it releases toxic compounds.

Untreated (A1) wood goes to authorised recycling or biomass energy recovery facilities. Lightly treated (A2) wood goes to ERZ-approved energy recovery processors. Heavily treated or regulated (A3/A4) wood is delivered to specialist licensed facilities. Garden prunings go to licensed composting or biomass processors. All disposal is documented, and an Entsorgungsnachweis is available on request.

Yes — this is one of ZüriClean's most popular combinations. Our team removes the wood first, then performs the property cleaning in the same session. This is particularly efficient for tenants vacating a flat who need both a clearance and an end-of-tenancy clean before the landlord inspection.

Yes. We provide a written Entsorgungsnachweis (disposal confirmation) on request. This documents that your wood was collected and disposed of in compliance with Swiss environmental regulations — useful for landlord inspections, property sales, or employer reimbursement claims.

Yes. We cover all Kreise 1 through 12 in Zürich City, plus surrounding communes including Winterthur, Schlieren, Dietikon, Dübendorf, Thalwil, Küsnacht, Opfikon, Glattbrugg, and Kloten. Contact us if you are uncertain about your area.
